Hal Pilkington

Director of Photography

Hal Pilkington is a London based cinematographer. He has shot a range of commercial work for clients such as Amazon Prime Video, Umbro, University College London and the National Archives.

While studying at university, he met a group of filmmakers and together founded the production company Campdale Motion, for which he has lensed narrative short films, including the 16mm sci-fi drama ‘A Flight of Fancy’ currently on the festival circuit.

Hal’s approach to storytelling is heavily influenced by his background in the lighting department working on long-form productions for Netflix and the BBC. Integrating his postgraduate training in philosophy, Hal is developing a unique, conceptually informed style that can apply to any project, whether it be commercial or narrative.

Hal is constantly expanding his sources of visual inspiration. A few of his favourite filmmakers: Michaelangelo Antonnioni, Gaspar Noe, Ming-liang Tsai,  Andrei Tarkovsky, Roy Andersson, Ozu Yasujiro and Bi Gan.

Hal also directs his own narrative films. Hal made his fiction directorial debut in 2022 with ‘Smiley Face’ shot on 16mm black and white film. He is currently writing his next short, as well as a feature film.
